Important dates
“The Cranberry Fuel Company operated mines in southern West Virginia in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, until it was incorporated into the New River Coal Company around 1906. The mines were worked until 1958, when the coal began to play out.“ (Kevin Traube, submitted 3/05 )
“Cranberry, on upper Cranberry Creek in Raleigh County, was one of the few shaft mines in the area. It was originally owned by the Cranberry Fuel Co., and later by the New River Co. The mine, which was down in the Sewell seam, closed in 1958, followed a few months later by the company store. The mine was reopened for a while in the late 1960s and shut down for good in 1973.” (Coal Camp USA)

According to the 2004 West Virginia Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training state records, The Cranberry mines didn’t produce any tonnage after 1935.
